In the Name of Defense

“To open ourselves to truth and to face our personal and collective reality are not options that can be accepted or rejected. They are indispensable requirements for all people and societies that seek to humanize themselves and to be free.”
With the results of the presidential election, to say I’m disappointed is an understatement. As I read about the history of the genocide of my people in Guatemala, I am distraught to see how these forms of violence will persist today and in the near future. This mural depicts the mapping of more than 70,000 tons of bombs that have been dropped on Palestine since October 7, 2023. As the number of deaths of innocent Palestinians rise, these bombs are demolishing the land and making survival increasingly difficult. From a toxic smoke-filled air to a lack of access to clean water, every aspect of life in Palestine is polluted. In a climate-changed world, how can we move toward a cleaner future under the threat of bombs, and even nuclear warfare?
