Generic Brown Guy
February 2022
printout mask, tv, web camera.

For my "Foundations of New Media" class final, I chose to reflect on a phrase I heard at St. Olaf that was used as an insult; “generic brown guy.” I was confused as to what this meant and it stayed in the back of my head for a while. I confronted this phrase by asking eight participants to follow a script which contained different micro aggressions that I’ve experienced throughout my life. My hopes was to understand what it means to be a brown student at a PWI and what generic means to me. It was an uncomfortable experience for both sides as I chose to let the class learn about me through how others have viewed me.
